Between these transitions, I’ve dealt with the happiest moments (thus far) as well as the darkest of times (again, thus far). From time to time, I’ll catch a whiff of a familiar scent or hear a clip of a favorite song and be briefly transported to different time and place. I was able to attend the Boston show of Mae’s “Goodbye, Goodnight” tour with my good friend, John. John originally introduced me to Mae five years ago and has been a personal friend to the band for the last ten. We reminisced of 8 hour road trips in to Atlanta to see a show and drunken (…for me, at least) acoustic sets on the outside porch of the Beta Bar. The conversation turned to the years that had passed since then (aka our “youth”). Then the concert started…

The final show was riddled with so many memories: the feeling of being single for the first time in my adult life (awesome memory, mind you), the ending of a few significant romantic relationships, smiling on the train from Bangkok to Ayutthaya whilst listening to The Everglow on a backpacking trip through Thailand, driving through Skyline Drive (incidentally, listening to Skyline Drive along the way…cliché? Mayhaps), feeling less lonely after the solo move to a new city, and many many moments of pure happiness. Almost every song has a strong emotion or memory tied to it…for better or for worse. There were so many times that I needed to hear the words of someone that I could relate to or for a sense of familiarity and comfort. I didn’t realize how often I chose theirs.

Mae, you have been a good friend to me, as well as to many others. I am ceaselessly glad to have been able to spend time with you at the number of shows that I attended in the last five years, and I am glad to say that you are all wonderful people. Jacob, I will always remember your smiling face as I was greeted at every Mae show I’ve ever attended. You made each concert feel like a reunion. Rob, hanging out with you at the shows for the brief moments that we did were always enjoyable. Despite all the chaos, I always felt like you took out the time to say “hey” to an old fan. Dave, you are literally the voice of so many memories and, for that, I thank you. And to all of you, I am glad to have had the chance to personally meet each of you. It was awesome to feel that the connection between you guys and your fans didn’t end at the end of an album or concert. I never felt unable to have a conversation with any of you and feel that your humility is something that has made your music so personal to so many. It’s comforting to see it shine so bright in your characters. I hope that you know that you have a special place in the heart of at least one of your many friends and I wish the best of luck for all of you in what I can see as being your next significant transition. I hope to see you around again…and thanks once more for all the memories.

Until we meet again, goodbye, my dear friends.

a quick synopsis - 1 year to today

ok, quick synopsis of what i’ve been doing with my time in the last year:

as a young professional trying to pay off a good amount of debt in an expensive city, i decided to try to save some money by replacing going out (aka bars/clubs) with working out. january of last year, i also decided to go pescaterian and dropped about 12 lbs. according to some people (*ahem* James), i’ve become less intimidating. however, what i’ve lost in bulk i’ve gained in speed and flexibility. with that said, let me explain:

i hurt my foot in a motorcycle accident roughly a (nov 08). from the time i was able to walk again, i began running (feb/mar 09). pre-accident, my furthest distance was one excruciating mile. after a winter of seated toe raises and countless numbers of elliptical sessions, i was able push two in the spring…then 3…then 4…all the way to a half-marathon in dec 09. my normal runs are between 6 and 8 miles, with a long run at roughly 10 running at a 10min/mile pace. definitely an improvement from last year…booya.

about the same time i started running, i started rock climbing at the local REI (best store…EVER). i started top roping and have been doing that for over a year now. i’ve recently began bouldering and am about to finish a lead climb certification course (the course, mind you, that has left me recovering from a sprained ankle…don’t want to die without any scars, right? :oP ). i’m going to throw down my skill levels below for fellow climbers:

rock wall -5’10” clean

bouldering - V3 clean

ok, enough about working out…

in oct 09, i moved in with a roomie. it saves me a ton of money, and i now have someone to talk to when i go home. i’m still having some adjustment issues (having gone from no roommates to having one again), but that’s expected.

aside from that the year has had its ups and downs. i’ve definitely had my share of joy and pain, but who doesn’t? what matters is that you keep moving forward.

I dive into the deep—into the sea inside of me
to find another song, to find a place where I belong.

something new

it’s been a while since i posted anything on here that was of an original thought (aka, not a link, picture, video, etc). i figured (with a little help from a finch) that it may be time to try this whole blog thing again. i’m not a fan of the idea of tooting my own horn, but i figure that, if anything, i can use this as a way for people to keep in touch with what’s going on with my life, but on everyone’s own time. i am, of course, still accepting phone calls…you just won’t get any of the nice pictures i’ll be putting up ;oP

roseb4hoes:
